MassDOT has announced that it will extend the MBTA Silver Line from East Boston into Chelsea. A $33.7 million contract for the first phase of the extension was approved on Wednesday.
The first phase of the extension includes plans for three new stations at Eastern Ave., Box District and Mystic Mall, which will have inbound and outbound platforms and will include shelters, bicycle racks, fare collection equipment, and other features. Then, the project’s second phase will include a new Commuter Rail station at the Mystic Mall location.
This bus line extension is expected to help “fill the gap” between parts of Chelsea, East Boston, and South Boston’s Seaport – basically, the areas that the T’s Blue Line service doesn’t cover.
